Episode 165: Vegan Diet: A Win for the Processed Food Industry?
Monday Dec 02, 2019
Monday Dec 02, 2019
The vegan agenda strikes again, this time with the film The Game Changers that posits a vegan diet as superior for athletic performance and as the ultimate human diet. A film founded on junky science and vegan dogma like this comes out every year or so and this one is no exception with its straight up lack of evidence, sexy graphics and “real life” stories of lives transformed by a vegan diet. If you haven’t watched it, save yourself the two hours and instead tune to hear Ali and Becki’s take on the film’s main points, how Big Food is getting in bed with the vegan movement and why animal protein has a place in an optimal, whole food based approach.
In this episode, Ali and Becki dig in to the problematic nature of this film, from funding by a major pea protein company to the highly unscientific “experiments” meant to convince viewers that a vegan diet is the way of the future. Instead of a nerdy scientific point by point discussion, tune in for a balanced conversation around the brokenness of our food system and why opting out of animal products is not the answer. Learn about unique attributes only found in animal products, why bioavailability matters and how animals can be part of a sustainable food system that is ultimately the only way to save the planet. Plus, hear us read the ingredient lists of some of the new vegan frankenfoods on the market and learn why these have no business going in your body!

Episode 163: Supporting Detox with Real Food
Monday Nov 18, 2019
Monday Nov 18, 2019
Your body is wired with the ability to detoxify via the liver and the kidneys supported by excretion through urine, sweat, and stool; however many of us are in a state of overload from the 6+ billion pounds of toxins released in our environment annually. Taking the time to nourish this process both by clean eating and an abundance of the nutrients that support phase 1 and 2 biochemical processes aids in supporting optimal metabolism and whole body health.
In this episode of the Naturally Nourished podcast, Ali and Becki discuss why you need to do a 10-day detox and how your body’s detox pathways work as well as the nutrients required to support them. When your body loses weight or body fat the adipocytes (fat cells) release toxins, often endocrine disruptors which can then wreak havoc on your metabolism, hormones, and neurological system often leading to a new undesired symptom or weight loss stall. A sound protocol focuses on metabolic reset while supporting digestive function both to enhance nutrient absorption, support gut integrity and microbiome balance, as well as supporting antioxidant capacity and anti-inflammatory effects.
Ali will unpack the functional pathways of your body, sources of toxins, where plants fit, lifestyle support, and food-as-medicine to support detoxification. She also takes time to discuss hormesis or the impact of a stressor on the body to make it stronger in this episode speaking to the carnivore movement and anti-nutrients of plants, phytocompounds. Tune in to hear her approach on how bioflavonoids may serve as a stressor but if their outcomes are to support endogenous levels of glutathione and other well accepted beneficial compounds, there is an important place for them in our diet!

Maura & Danny Vega are the dynamic duo behind Fat Fueled Family. Maura—classically trained in ballet, contemporary and other forms of dance, learned the importance of discipline and consistency at an early age.
Danny was a lifelong football player who finished his career at Columbia University. Danny’s obsession from as early as five years old was strength and conditioning. He was able to pursue this obsession as a collegiate strength and conditioning coach, and now, he gets to spend his days learning and teaching others about various topics such as performance nutrition, building muscle, and lifestyle coaching.
Maura is just as passionate about these topics, however she also educates mothers and families on how to eat a proper diet and give the most nourishing nutrition available to their children. Together, they are on a mission to boycott kid’s menus and empower families to take a much more active role in their health vs. being dependent on the pharmaceutical/healthcare industrial complex. They cohost the fat fueled family podcast, a weekly podcast dedicated to five main topics:
Nutrition
Fitness
Mindset
Peaceful parenting
Unschooling
